I liked the art a lot, and I found the graphic novel format to be a great fit for the story. The art reminded me a little of Boondocks at times, which is a good thing. There's a nice variety of techniques used throughout, from pencil sketches, to zipitone, to silouhette (a favorite of mine).

The autobiographical work, published through DC Comics' Vertigo was nominated for two Eisner Awards, the highest honor in the comic book industry. Percy Carey (born 11 June 1970), better known by his stage name MF Grimm, is an American rapper, record producer, actor and comic book writer from Manhattan, New York. As a child, he appeared on Sesame Street several times.
For Grimm “drug dealing is not the solution to everythingI could never do that anymoreit’s easy to pick up the gun. It’s easy to talk about drugs. I don’t want to attract that kind of attention to myself anymore.” Lamentations aside and lessons learned, Grimm’s work are invaluable documents and cultural gems that bridge a gap between the rap and comic world (incidentally Grimm is an avid comic connoisseur). Both Sentences and You Only Live Twice serve as a kind of rehabilitation for the man, “everything I’ve done is wrong and I just needed to be a man and admit that,” with this in mind, Grimm hopes that others will learn from his mistakes, especially those fooled by the inflated contemporary rap culture. Since the early 2000s, MF Grimm has maintained success releasing albums as a solo artist and with DJ/producer Drasar Monumental in the 2010s. Grimm has released five solo albums, five collaborative albums and two compilation albums.

The best part about this story, however, is the controversy as to whether or not it takes place on 616. Warren Ellis and Joe Quesada seem to think that it takes place on some alternate Earth (what with most Marvel heroes being depicted as total dicks), while several Marvel books ( Civil War: Battle Damage Report, for one) explicitly state that the events in NextWave were canon and on Earth-616. Mix that with the copious amount of tongue-in-cheek humor of Ellis (as well as ), and you got one weird-ass book. What more could you want? The story actually begins with a snowstorm that I remember quite well, in 1994. It is sort of interesting how I read this book and then spent a couple hours watching old rap battles on youtube. I really liked it, for some reason. I found it interesting if a bit dull, but then, it's a history. It's the autobiography of one of those gangsta rappers who was always getting shot in the early 90s. This is a period of American history that I was present and aware for and still completely clueless about.
